It’s been a good week weather wise and I’m recovering from a back injury. All is good and I wanted to do a post review about a movie I watched last night. My blog will not just be about the novels I write but other interests of mine that actually inspire my writing and art, so I’m in no way being endorsed for this review. Just think of it as a friend telling you about a movie and his opinion.
As a long-time fan of Sci-Fi – reading and watching – I feel I’ve hit the jack-pot recently with my choices on what to read and watch, so far.
Most of the films, Sci-Fi ones included, on Amazon Prime are embarrassingly trash, which is why I rarely rate Amazon Prime. I Watched new Sci-Fi thriller last night called The Tomorrow War which I saw promotions for some weeks but didn’t pay much attention until now. Oh I did intend to watch it, just that it wasn’t on my immediate radar of things to do.
Now, I have to say the movie has a slight blend of other 80s sci-fi classics, but here’s the plot in a nutshell. When soldiers arrive from the near future to 2022 demanding all world governments enlist their citizens as cannon fodder in a hopeless war against a rapacious alien species, that has invaded the world. A somewhat original plot that perked my interest some what. Chris Pratt’s (Guardians of the Galaxy) character is a family guy who’s typically heroic. The aliens are terrifyingly fast, ferocious big intelligent brutes, and the humour is also on point particularly with Sam Richardson. Yes, despite the doom and gloom there seems to be a good amount of humour in there where the film isn’t as dark as other films in the same genre. The plot hole about the aliens is thoroughly explained near the end. From start to finish I was engrossed in the movie and wondering weather I was in the cinema as this movie seemed way too good to be on Amazon Prime. Most movies after watching them lack the power to give me nightmares but this one admittedly did.
As already mentioned I could even see some elements of other movies like The Terminator, Aliens and The Thing combined (a careless comparison some would argue) though I wouldn’t class it as a rip-off of those films nor a blatant homage as this militarily Sci-Fi film seems capable of standing on its own. And if you like classic monster/alien militarily Sci-Fi then this movie will be up your street.
I give The Tomorrow War a 4/5 rating.
